Who I teach

Children from around age 7 or 8. We start on pBone or a small-bore student trombone, build a reliable sound, and work towards playing in school ensembles. Parents are welcome to sit in.

Adult beginners and returners. Many of my students are adults starting from nothing or coming back after years away. Lessons fit around your work, and progress is faster than most adults expect.

Exam and audition students. ABRSM and Trinity grades from Initial to Grade 8, county ensemble auditions, and conservatoire entry. I have prepared students on both sides of the audition panel.

What lessons cover

Why learn with a specialist

Most local teachers cover trombone as one of many instruments. I have played it professionally for over twenty years, including orchestral, opera, jazz and theatre work, and taught it at conservatoire level. The details that hold players back, slide timing, alternate positions, register changes, are things I work on every day.

FAQ

Trombone lesson questions

Do I need my own trombone?

Not for your first lesson. I will help you choose between hiring, buying second hand, or starting on a plastic pBone, which costs around £100 new.

How long until I can play a tune?

Most beginners play simple recognisable tunes within three or four lessons. Playing comfortably with others usually takes a year or so of steady practice.

Tenor or bass trombone?

Everyone starts on tenor. Bass trombone is a specialism you can move to later, and as a professional bass trombonist I can take you there when you are ready. See my bass trombone lessons.

How much practice between lessons?

Little and often beats marathon sessions. Fifteen focused minutes a day is enough for steady beginner progress; exam students need more.
